Precious Metals: Maybelline Eye Studio Color Plush Palettes
Metallic eyeshadows, one of this fall’s big trends
Metal is having a major moment!
Wait — before you put on your Metallica t-shirt and bust out your air guitar, I’m referring to metals, as in metallic makeup finishes.
They’re big this fall, and totally worthy of a good head bang or two, because they make it so quick and easy to add extra flare to your eye looks.
And this year there are many metallic options shining their wares on store shelves, both at the high and the low end. One of my favorites is by Maybelline — the awesomely affordable Eye Studio Color Plush Silk Eyeshadows.
A few of Maybelline’s Eye Studios palettes…
I was mining the aisles at my local Rite Aid about a week ago when I struck the drugstore equivalent of makeup gold. I was looking for a less expensive alternative to Yves Saint Laurent’s $55 Eyeshadow Palettes when I found them. Maybelline’s have a similarly buttery texture and mirror-like metallic shine…but they only about $10 instead of $55!
They’re a great way to dip your toe into the metallic makeup water and try one of this fall’s trends without making a major investment, and that also goes for time, as they’re easy to blend and virtually foolproof.
Below are four of the limited edition palettes recently released as part of the new fall 2013 On the Runway Collection. If you aren’t able to track ‘em down online, check your local drugstore.
If none of these limited edition ones light your fire, there are quite a few other palettes in Maybelline’s permanent line, carried at drugstores, many grocery stores, Ulta and online.

So, how does one wear metallic eyeshadow?
Well, there’s more than one way, but if you don’t feel ready yet for full-on metallic, you could try this: pat one or two colors on your lids. Then, sweep your favorite neutral beige or brown into the crease.
That way, you get a quick flash of metallic shine when you blink.
If you’re feeling more adventurous, try wearing all four shades together, like I’m doing with the Desert Fantasy palette in this picture here…

And if you really want to crank it up, wet your brush first with a spritz of makeup setting spray (I like MAC Fix + and Urban’s Decay All Nighter) before loading your brush with eyeshadow. It should intensify the shiny finish and amplify the pigments, resulting in more oomph and shine.
To complete your look and keep your makeup balanced, pair any of the eye looks above with your favorite nude blush and lipstick.
Then go kick some @ss.
