5 Fantastic Drugstore Mascaras

June 26th, 2013 By  |  18 Comments

The search for a great mascara is almost like the search for a perfect pair of jeans. What works great for someone else might not suit your own needs. And of course, we all have different kinds of lashes to work with! I’ve tried countless mascaras, and rather than recommend one must-have to you, I thought I’d offer up five options that can suit different needs. Also, with  mascara having such a short shelf-life (usually 3 to 4 months), it’s something you’re frequently repurchasing… so I’m happy to report that all of these mascaras are available for right around $10 or less!

For Longer Lashes: L’oreal Double Extend Mascara ($10, Drug/Discount stores)

This is one of the best lengthening mascaras I’ve tried. For short, stubby lashes, mascara primers can give the extra boost the lashes need. This mascara has a built-in primer that you apply first (the white end), and then you finish with a coat of the black mascara. It works beautifully to provide length without the unnatural looking ends that some mascaras create.

For Thicker Lashes: Almay Get Up & Grow Mascara ($8, Drug/Discount stores)

I love how this mascara pumps up my sparse lashes! It’s a great combination of a fantastic, thick brush and a formula that’s somewhat on the dry side. While a wet formula mascara can be more heavy and cause already sparse lashes to stick together, this dry formula really clings on to each lash to thicken each one. The brush is loaded with bristles, so you also get some nice separation as well.

For More Length AND Thickness: Essence I Love Extreme Crazy Volume Mascara ($4.99, Ulta)

I’ve mentioned this mascara before on Gloss Daily, and it truly is an amazing multi-tasking mascara! For me, this mascara doesn’t exactly do what false lashes can (in my opinion, no mascara truly does), but it’s the next closest thing! This brush is loaded with rubber bristles, and I love that even the tip of the wand has bristles, allowing for wonderful separation. I love the length that this mascara provides, but it’s ability to also define and thicken the lashes makes it a real all-star mascara! If you’re frustrated with the thickness and length of your natural lashes, give this one a try!

For Perfectly Defined Lower Lashes: Maybelline Lash Discovery Mascara ($6, Drug/Discount Stores)

This “mini brush” mascara is one of the only things I like to use on my lower lashes! There are two reasons why: the tiny size of this brush defines the lashes without overloading them with product, and it doesn’t smudge! I don’t even use the waterproof version, and I still don’t encounter any smudging or flaking. I think a lot of mascaras can look really obvious on the lower lashes, but this will define them and make them look like you’ve got naturally beautiful lower lashes. If you just want a natural look on the upper lashes, you can use Lash Discovery that way as well!

For Fun in the Sun (and water): Cover Girl Clump Crusher – Water Resistant ($6, Drug/Discount Stores)

If you’re getting extra active this summer and need a mascara that can keep up, try this one. Clump Crusher by Cover Girl has a rubber bristle brush with a gentle curve. The relatively small size makes it very easy to reach all of your lashes and build length without clumps. This lasted me through tears at an outdoor warm-weather Alabama wedding, and stayed looking flawless. The thing I don’t like about most waterproof mascaras is that they can be so hard to remove, and sometimes you lose some lashes in the process! This one is actually rather easy to wash off. Love that!

  • I’m actually a huge fan of the new Cover Girl Clump Crusher mascara, and I was happy to see it made the list! My eyes can sometimes be sensitive to mascara and this is the first one I’ve tried in a long time that doesn’t irritate my eyes by the end of the day.

  • Loving the Revlon Clump Crusher and it’s replaced L’OREAL Voluminous Lash for just that reason. Living in TX, I need waterproof mascara, and the Clump Crusher easier to remove.

  • Love Loreal Double Extend. I check out others every time something new comes out, but I go back to it. I love most any Loreal mascara. Although I have tried the clump crusher one and I like it. Lately, I’ve been using my one coat of my Double Extend then a coat of clump crusher to really separate. I really like the brush on the clump crusher. I’ve even stuck that brush in the Double Extend and used it that way. I think I’ll save that brush when the mascara is gone.

  • I love Get Up and Grow! I got it because of you. It does, for some reason, smudge more than I would like. I was wondering if you have tried the waterproof version. Do you happen to know if the formula is as good as non-waterproof? :) i know sometimes they differ.
