Pore Over

If you’re one of the many women (including myself!) who attempts to do their own extractions (aka squeezing the gunk out of your pores), STOP! P.S. Sorry for the exclamation—I’m yelling more at myself here than at you. When a patch of blackheads is staring at you in the mirror, I know how hard it is to resist touching or picking them. But trust me when I tell you that prodding can do more damage than good. Cornelia Zicu, Global Chief Creative Officer for Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa and Celebrity Aesthetician couldn’t agree more. Here are her no-pop tips for clearing out your pores for smoother, softer skin. Leave the extracting to the pros.

  •  Be sure to use a deep pore cleansing mask at least once a week. Apply the mask for 15 minutes. Opt for a clay-based mask to dry and absorb excess sebum and oil from the skin’s pores.
  • Swipe a glycolic acid pad over your face at least once a day (preferable is the evening time, before bed). This will help continue the exfoliation process, minimize sebum buildup, and shrink enlarged pores.
  • Use a glycolic cleanser one or two days a week.
  • Go step by step, just like a facial—wash, peel, exfoliate, mask—and then afterwards on clean skin, apply a super-hydrating serum or moisturizer formulated with vitamins and antioxidants.
