What’s Your Date Night Beauty Routine?

February 6th, 2013 By  |  3 Comments

Ever since my very first date night with my now-husband, I’ve been loyal to the same date night beauty routine: wash face (or use a cleansing wipe if I’m in a rush), rub lotion on my face and scented oil on my shoulders, arms and hands, swipe on a deep raisin-y lipstick (my guy isn’t a fan of red:/) and then blot it down with a tissue, apply a cream charcoal shadow close to my top lash line and top it with a glistening brown powder shadow, brush on three layers of black mascara, put my hair in a tight bun or ponytail…and BAM!

I’ve been working this regimen forEVER and was just thinking that perhaps it’s time to switch things up a bit. I chatted with Lauren Cosenza, professional makeup artist and creator of DIVAliciousBlog, about some va-va-voom ideas.

ME: How can I score that “come-hither” eye look?

LC: For smoldering, alluring eyes, forget the precise cat-eye it took you all of 2012 to master and skip the crayola colors too. Save them for parties or girls’ night out. On a date, it’s best to enhance your eye shape and color with soft smoky shadows and smudged liner. And of course, lots and lots of mascara—those long dramatic lashes will basically do the flirting for you.

ME: Eeeks! Valentine’s Day falls during the week this year. What if you’re the lady who has exactly five seconds to get ready for a date after work?
LC: Makeup over makeup can look cakey and also exaggerate skin imperfections like fine lines and wrinkles. When you don’t have the time to remove daytime makeup and start anew, the key is to refresh the skin first with a mist that can be layered over makeup. MAC Fix+ is my go-to for this. A few spritzes and the skin is hydrated and moist. Then you can touch up your makeup, plus bump it up for evening. Don’t forget to add some gloss over that lipstick and amp up the intensity of the eyes.
ME: I ask every makeup expert this oh-so controversial question—do guys dig red lipstick or not?
LC: Red lipstick for life? Yay! Red lipstick for a date? Nay. Red lips may create the perfect power pout, but no matter how sexy or beautiful, red lips are just not kissable.
ME: On date nights I like to carry a tiny purse (or just my wallet, if possible). Can I get away with that and still look gorge all evening?
LC: The essentials for a date are a face compact and lipgloss. To eliminate shine, you should bring a compact that has a sponge. Throughout the night press just the sponge to areas with shine. If any coverage is needed, lightly apply cream or powder to the sponge first and then apply. After eating or drinking (or a stolen kiss), you may lose lipcolor if it’s not longwear (which isn’t ideal for a date anyway as it tends to be drying), so gloss up throughout the night to keep lips soft and supple.
